  • Approximately 309,247 (52%) of the bridges in the United States are classified as a city/county/township bridge. Approximately 83,479, or 27%, are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
  • An estimated 219,000 of the U.S. bridges are owned by counties (71% of city/county/township bridges). Local roads account for about 75 % of the nation’s highways and roads (about 2.93 million miles). Counties manage about 1.74 million miles of those roads while cities and townships another 1.19 million miles.
  • Short span bridges make up over two-thirds of North America’s over 650,000 inventoried bridges.
  • Short span bridges are typically 140’ in length or less and are generally used on local roads and highways.
  • Newly developed steel grades with higher yield strength, better toughness and improved weldability offer significant benefits in weight savings and fabrication cost reduction.
