Short span bridges provide vital links in the nation’s infrastructure network. Yet, nearly a quarter of these bridges are classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. According to ASCE, more than 30% of existing bridges have exceeded their 50‐year design life.
This situation presents a significant challenge for cash‐strapped state and local governments. The steel industry has developed technological and design innovations for bridges under 140 feet that save significant time and costs for county, state, and federal bridge officials.
The presentation, sponsored by the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance, will cover the safe and cost‐effective design, detail, and installation of short span steel bridges.

Dr. Greg Michaelson is an associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Marshall University and a member of the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance’s Bridge Technology Center. He completed his Ph.D. at West Virginia University in 2014 and is a registered professional engineer in West Virginia. Dr. Michaelson’s research interests are focused in the area of structural engineering and include efficiency & economics of steel bridge design, modular/accelerated bridge construction, and experimental investigation of structural systems.
