AISI Highlights Steel Industry Priorities: Sends Action Items to Administration and Congress
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) this week has reached out to senior policymakers in the Trump administration and key members of Congress with a blueprint highlighting the top steel industry priorities of AISI members for 2025.
Kevin Dempsey, AISI president and CEO, said, “2025 presents an opportunity for the new administration and Congress to take a holistic look at the key issues impacting steel manufacturing. As policymakers work to ensure America’s national security and strengthen our economy, AISI is urging consideration of three sets of important policy priorities on trade, tax and regulation.”
Specifically, AISI’s policy recommendations include measures that enhance existing trade measures to address foreign unfair trade practices, ensure common-sense regulations that foster innovation and implement tax policies to encourage new and continued investment.
“Steel is essential to the everyday lives of all Americans — cars and trucks, the roads and bridges they drive on, home appliances and the electricity grid that powers them, and the entire energy sector, from oil and gas to wind, solar and nuclear energy, depend on steel,” said Dempsey. “These policy recommendations will enable the continued success of the American steel industry and the jobs it supports.”

Does steel provide a sustainable option for bridges?
Steel is the most recycled material on the planet. Some of the sustainable advantages of steel include:
- Steel from a disassembled bridge can be used again for another project.
- Steel bridges can last 100 years or more, with minimal maintenance over their long service lives.
- The high strength of steel permits longer spans, which minimizes disruption to underlying habitats.
- Steel is highly resistant to extreme natural disasters such as earthquakes.
- The American steel industry has achieved a 31 percent reduction in energy intensity and a 36 percent reduction in greenhouse gas intensity since 1990.

The National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA) named Missouri’s FARM Bridges Design/Build Bundle the 2026 Prize Bridge Award winner in the Short Span category.
