Short Span Steel Bridges Support Safer Jobsites
Construction Safety Week, May 5-9, is an annual, industry-wide event that brings together building professionals to reaffirm their commitment to safety. The theme for this year—“All In Together”—underscores the shared responsibility all have to ensure every worker returns home safe at the end of each day.
One way the industry is making jobsites safer is through the increased use of prefabricated short span steel bridges. By shifting much of the construction process off-site, steel bridges may reduce the risks workers face during installation.

Prefabricated steel bridge modules can be shipped directly to the jobsite and installed in 2 days or less.
How Prefabricated Short Span Steel Bridges Improve Jobsite Safety
- Less time in hazardous environments: Bridge components are built in a controlled shop and delivered ready to install, reducing the time crews spend working near live traffic, at heights, or over water.
- Smaller on-site crews: Because much of the work is done off-site, fewer workers are needed for installation—helping lower overall exposure to potential jobsite hazards.
- Faster construction timelines: Some prefabricated short span steel bridge systems can be installed in two days or less, minimizing disruptions and shortening the duration of safety risks on site.
- Better quality control: Fabrication in a controlled environment ensures more accurate construction, reducing the chance of field errors or rework that can lead to safety incidents.
By emphasizing prefabrication, short span steel bridges not only accelerate project schedules but also reinforce the commitment to sending every worker home safe each day.
As we go “All In Together” this Construction Safety Week, let’s recognize how engineered steel solutions make every jobsite a safer one.

More Benefits – And Support from the SSSBA
In addition to enhancing jobsite safety, short span steel bridges offer long-term benefits like durability, design flexibility and cost-efficiency. With rapid installation and reduced life-cycle costs, steel bridges are a smart and sustainable choice for counties, townships and DOTs looking to replace aging infrastructure efficiently and safely.
The Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance is here to help. From free design tools like eSPAN140, to technical guidance, case studies and educational resources, the SSSBA supports project teams at every step—from concept through construction. SSSBA and our members work closely with owners and designers to ensure safe and efficient bridge projects across the country.
