Steel Pedestrian Bridge Provides Rapid Trail Connection in Modesto, California

A new prefabricated steel pedestrian bridge is helping extend the Virginia Corridor Trail in Modesto, California, providing a safe and visually distinctive connection across Standiford Avenue.

Manufactured by Contech Engineered Solutions, the Continental Pedestrian Truss Bridge was installed on July 17, 2026, as part of the City of Modesto’s Virginia Corridor Trail Project. The three-span bridge provides a 345-foot-long connection and is 10 feet wide.

The project presented several challenges. The bridge needed to connect the heavily used Virginia Corridor Trail while crossing Standiford Avenue, a busy Modesto thoroughfare. Construction access was limited by nearby housing and apartments, while existing overhead electrical wires further constrained the work area. The amount of time available for closing the roadway was also limited.

Steel Selected for Speed, Durability and Aesthetics

A prefabricated weathering steel pedestrian truss was selected because it offered a combination of aesthetics, durability, reduced maintenance and rapid installation.

These characteristics were particularly important for a project located within a constrained urban corridor. The bridge needed to be visually compatible with the trail while also minimizing disruption to traffic and surrounding properties during construction.

The Capstone-style truss provides an appearance inspired by historic railroad trestles, giving the bridge a distinctive architectural character. At the same time, the weathering steel finish provides a durable structural system with reduced maintenance requirements.

Prefabricated construction also allowed the bridge to be manufactured and delivered in sections, reducing the amount of work that needed to be completed over the active roadway.

Rapid Installation Minimizes Traffic Impacts

The bridge was delivered in six sections on six trucks, with two sections forming each span. All three spans were assembled and erected on site in two days.

On the first day, one span was assembled and erected without closing Standiford Avenue. The remaining two spans were completed during a 22-hour roadway closure on the second day.

The approach was well suited to the project’s tight construction window. By using prefabricated steel sections, the project team could complete the critical work over the roadway within a single planned closure rather than requiring a prolonged disruption to traffic.

The installation demonstrates an important advantage of prefabricated steel construction for pedestrian and trail bridges: structural components can be fabricated in advance and rapidly assembled and erected at the project site when minimizing construction impacts is a priority.

Designed for Durability and Safety

The bridge features H-section floor beams supporting a cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. It is designed for a 90 psf pedestrian live load and a 10,000-pound vehicle load.

Safety features include horizontal steel safety railing with a rub rail and toe rail, along with galvanized steel fencing. Curved throw-prevention fencing was incorporated where the bridge crosses Standiford Avenue.

Electrical wire openings were also incorporated to accommodate bridge lighting.

A Bridge Designed to Stand Out

The historic railroad-trestle appearance was an important part of the bridge’s design. The weathering steel gives the structure a distinctive appearance while complementing the character of the trail corridor.

The installation also generated considerable interest from the surrounding community. Residents gathered to watch the work, including a large group who brought lawn chairs to observe the installation. Passing motorists gave thumbs-up gestures throughout the day, and several members of the community expressed their appreciation.

The result is more than a functional crossing. The bridge provides a prominent new feature along the Virginia Corridor Trail while giving pedestrians and cyclists a safe grade-separated crossing of Standiford Avenue.

Connecting the Virginia Corridor Trail

The bridge is part of the seventh phase of the Virginia Corridor Trail Project. The approximately $11.3 million phase will extend the trail between Woodrow and Union avenues, with completion anticipated in early 2027.

By carrying the trail over Standiford Avenue, the new bridge provides an important connection for pedestrians and cyclists while eliminating the need for trail users to cross the busy thoroughfare at grade.

 

A Steel Solution for a Challenging Site

The Virginia Corridor Trail bridge demonstrates how prefabricated steel can address several project requirements at once.

The material and construction approach provided the rapid installation needed to minimize traffic disruption, the durability and reduced maintenance desired for a long-term public asset, and the aesthetic character needed for a prominent community trail connection.

For pedestrian and trail bridge projects where construction access is limited and traffic impacts must be carefully managed, prefabricated steel can provide an efficient solution without sacrificing appearance or long-term performance.
