United for Infrastructure - Building Sustainable Solutions

Building a Sustainable Infrastructure 3-Part Video Series

In cooperation with the American Iron and Steel Institute and American Galvanizers Association, the SSSBA presented a webinar featuring industry experts presenting information on:

  • Current proposed infrastructure plans, with information specifically related to an investment in our nation’s bridges.
  • Sustainability of the American steel industry, with ideas on how to create a more sustainable infrastructure with steel bridge solutions.
  • Material and coating options to extend the life of a steel bridge 100 years and beyond.

The webinar was part of United for Infrastructure 2021: A Week to Champion America’s Infrastructure.

Overview

With congressional leadership and the president talking about $2 trillion investment legislation to create a more resilient infrastructure, the steel industry is ready to meet the challenge of solving the national bridge infrastructure crisis with sustainable steel solutions. Short span bridges provide vital links in the nation’s infrastructure network.

Yet, more than 220,000 bridges, representing 36 percent of the national bridge inventory, need major repair work or should be replaced. This situation presents a significant challenge for cash-strapped state and local governments.

To responsibly fix our nation’s bridges with sustainable solutions, the future must start today. With new innovative materials, designs and protection systems available today, the U.S. steel industry is well positioned to build bridges that will last well into the next century – and possibly beyond.
