Today, designers and engineers are specifying steel due to its superior toughness, design flexibility and cost efficiencies.  Weathering and galvanized steels provide cost-effective and durable solutions in the harshest environments. The steel industry is constantly conducting new research to analyze and improve the durability and reliability of steel bridge and culvert structures.  The following is a list of research and development projects relating to short span steel bridges and culverts.

  • Guide Specification for Highway Bridge Fabrication With HPS 100W (HPS 690W) Steel for Non-Fracture Critical Applications, 2018 Edition (April 2018) – This 20-page document provides the latest recommended methodology to fabricate and weld structures using ASTM A709 or AASHTO M270, Grade HPS 100W (HPS 690W) steel. This edition supersedes the original 2012 edition. (From Lon Yost and the Steel Market Development Institute’s Welding Advisory Committee)  Download PDF

  • Technical Report - "eSPAN140 Performance Assessment: V-65 Jesup South Bridge (Buchanan County, Iowa) - The report provides experimental and analytical testing data that verifies free online short span steel bridge design tool eSPAN140 produces efficient and economical solutions in the short span range.Download PDF
  • Dr. Karl Barth, WVU: An Assessment Of Weathering Steel Bridges In West Virginia  - Provides an overview of a comprehensive assessment of the performance of the weathering steel bridge inventory in West Virginia.
  • Weldability of ASTM A1010 Steel - This study supports using ASTM A1010 steel for bridge construction in mildly salty and humid environments. It shows that A1010 has more resistance to corrosion than weathering steel or high performance steel.
  • Field Performance Evaluation of Polymer Coated Structures in NY - A report by Corrpro Companies, Inc. documenting the performance and environmental conditions of polymer coated/asphalt paved CSP in New York state.
  • Field Performance Evaluation of Polymer Coated Structures in WI - A report by Corrpro Companies, Inc. documenting the performance and environmental conditions of polymer coated CSP in Wisconsin of sites up to 27 years old.
  • Invert Abrasion Testing of CSP Coatings - A report by Corrpro Companies, Inc. documenting the procedures and results of full scale abrasion simulation of various CSP coatings and pavings.
