Robert J. Wills to Address American Galvanizers Association TechForum (September 28)
Robert J. Wills, P.E., vice president, construction program for the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), will address participants at the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) TechForum on September 28, 2021.
The AGA TechForum is an annual conference that offers technical presentations and discussion topics common to the galvanizing process and allows peers to exchange ideas. The event will be held from September 28-30, 2021 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Wills’ keynote address will take place on September 28 at 1:15 p.m. CDT. He will discuss the topic: “Transportation/Infrastructure Public Policy and Steel Industry Update.”
The presentation will review the current proposed government infrastructure plans, with information on the latest U.S. transportation bill’s potential impact on the steel and hot-dip galvanizing industries.
Robert Wills is responsible for overseeing AISI’s construction market program in the areas of commercial buildings, residential construction, and transportation/infrastructure markets, as well as the AISI Construction Technical Program, which covers codes and standards.
He works directly with senior leadership in the construction market program and with customer/partner associations and alliances such as the American Galvanizers Association. His expertise in the transportation/infrastructure markets is primarily in the area of short span steel bridges (with lengths up to 140 feet), which comprise most of the U.S. bridge inventory. He also has experience in the steel utility pole market.
Wills took on his current position in 2008 following 18 years of service with the AISI Codes and Standards program, where his responsibilities encompassed design specifications, test methods, product specifications and installation standards related to steel in construction. He was very involved in the development of the International Building Code and the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Alabama.
AISI serves as the voice of the American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI’s membership is comprised of integrated and electric arc furnace steelmakers, and associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. Bridge Task Force and AASHTO Steel Leaders Meet in Alaska
The Steel Bridge Task Force and AASHTO Steel and Metals Technical Committee met in Anchorage for technical presentations, project updates and industry recognition. The meetings concluded with an Alaska DOT hosted tour of the Juneau Creek Bridge and surrounding Sterling Highway construction.

SSSBA to Present at North Central States Consortium in Omaha, NE (Sept. 28-30)
Dr. Michael Barker, University of Wyoming, will represent SSSBA at the North Central States Consortium (NCSC) in Omaha, Nebraska. His presentation (Tuesday, September 29, 1:30–2:15 p.m.) will explore how optimized plate girders can expand the range of steel solutions for bridges with spans of 60 to 100 feet.
